The Gare du Sud opened its doors in 1892, 28 years after the Gare de Thiers. Its architect is Prosper BOBIN (1844-1923), a disciple of Jacques HITTORFF, who built the Gare du Nord in Paris. The Gare du Sud, nicknamed by the Niçois as the "Palais du Rail", saw trains arriving until 1991; abandoned, it almost fell prey to demolishers.

Regarding its facade, it is classified as a Historical Monument and was saved in 2004. On the track side, what would become the "halle gourmande" is an impressive metal frame of 87m long by 23m wide. This architectural masterpiece, inspired by Gustave Eiffel, comes from the Universal Exhibition of Paris. It was created in 1889 for the Russian pavilion and reassembled in Nice in 1891.
