Due to the importance of the Russian community established in Nice during the second half of the 19th century, the construction of a Russian church was decided. Tsarina Alexandra Fedorovna launched a subscription in 1856, and three years later, the Saint-Nicolas-et-Sainte-Alexandra church was inaugurated on Longchamp Street. It was then the first Russian church in Western Europe. However, it quickly became too small for the growing Russian colony.
In 1865, the TSAREWITCH, Nicolas Alexandrovitch, son of Alexander II, died at the age of twenty from meningitis while staying at Villa Bermond rented by his father. Shortly after, he bought the property and had a chapel built in honor of his son, according to the plans of architect David Grimm.
In 1903, construction work began on a cathedral near this oratory, the future Saint Nicholas Cathedral, according to the plans of architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky, a professor of architecture at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg. It was inaugurated in 1912.
