However, as the Russian community continued to expand and prosper, the church soon became too small to accommodate all the faithful.


In 1865, a tragic event deeply affected the community: Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, son of Tsar Alexander II, died of meningitis at the age of 20 while staying at the Villa Bermond in Nice.
To honor his memory, the Tsar purchased the property and ordered the construction of a chapel on the site.
